Getting Your First Non-Friend Client.

So you have a website and you have some business cards and you have a couple of friends who are putting in a good word for you to other people....so, what do you do next?

You get your first "non-friend" client.

In my case her name was Elsa and it was absolute love at first sight. She was about 8-9 months old, was bursting at the seems with energy and yet had one of the sweetest temperaments I have ever come across. I will be honest, she had some of the worst habits when we first met. She would pee in the kitchen because she was so excited to get her leash on. She would jump on you ALL THE TIME, no matter if you were in the house or on the road walking, she would jump for no reason at all.

Despite these habits, you couldn't help but love her. And because I loved her, I worked with these habits and worked to train these habits out of her. It was certainly not an overnight experience but with time and patience eventually they tapered off where now they are non-existent.

Elsa has the sweetest smile, LOVES her walks three times a week, and makes everyone happy when she passes by them. I will always be happy that Elsa was my first "non-friend" client.

Next Steps.

Now that I had all of this time on my hands it was time for me to decide where I wanted to start and get it moving.

Instagram, Facebook, Yelp & E-mail Account set up - ✔️

Business cards bought and dropped off to various Pet Stores, Vet Hospitals, Grooming Service Stores - ✔️

Lots of communication with past & current clients to let them know about new scheduling availability - ✔️

No kidding, there was a lot to do.

I won't lie, I was a little overwhelmed at first. I quickly learned however, that there were a lot of other people like me and therefore the resources available to me were endless.

Like me they were looking for flexibility, travel opportunities, the ability to work with as many lovable pets as possible and the most important desire within one's life, to be of service to one's community. With these newfound resources and reliable experiences from ones who have switched their career paths, I was ready to continue with this new adventure. And not only was I ready to continue, I was now excited to continue on this new adventure.

Most exciting change: www.McGeckoPetServices.com. My very own way to express my desire to serve my community in this way. This brought it all together.

Where It All Began.

McGecko Pet Services.

Where did it all begin? How did the idea develop? What took this idea and transformed it from a experimental passion project to a business?

These are common questions I get from Pet Owners, Friends/Family, really anyone who finds out what kind of business I own.

Well, the short answers are:

1) It started as a favor for some friends

2) Idea developed all by itself

3) My corporate role as a Marketing Coordinator was eliminated.

Over 10 years ago, I was asked by a couple of friends to stay at their home and watch their two dogs while they were on vacation. One was an American Bulldog named Guy and the other was a Husky/Wolf mix named Nikita. You will see their precious faces in the pictures next to this post. While I didn't know these pets very well at the time, we quickly became close friends and I loved them dearly. Guy with the amazing amount of drool he would produce from his giant head and Nikita who would always test the boundaries to keep you on your toes, these two pups truly did ignite a passion inside me for taking care of people's pets while they are away from home. They forged their way into my heart and will always hold a special place there.

From there word spread among my friend groups and so the journey of becoming a professional Pet-Sitter began.

About a year ago, I signed up on Pet-Sitting Service, just as an experiment to see if in my area of residence I could turn this passion into a career. As it turns out, it could turn and it did turn.

I kept this experiment going as a past-time, thinking I would just have a side passion helping to take care of my neighbors pets. The biggest change came when one afternoon my boss came into my office and told me that the company I had been apart of for  9 years, was eliminating my position. I was officially unemployed. With that shocking news, I took a couple of days to think about what I wanted out of a new career. What did I want? What were my goals? What did I want for my future?

And so, McGecko Pet Services began.
